A teacher first
For decades, Prof D Dey has stood before students as Head of the Department of Physics at St. Xavier's College, Ranchi.
His classroom was never just about equations and theories. It was about possibility. About showing young people that education could fundamentally change the trajectory of their lives and break the cycle of poverty within a single generation.
Physics was the subject he taught. Hope was what he shared.

Prof D Dey has always believed that education is not a privilege for the fortunate. It is a bridge that can carry an entire family from struggle to stability in a single generation.
He has seen it happen again and again. A student from a disadvantaged background who studies hard, gets guidance, and eventually pursues engineering, medicine, or research. That one person's success changes not just their own life, but their siblings', their children's, their community's.
This belief shaped everything he did as an educator.
Teaching beyond the classroom
Prof D Dey's contribution went far beyond formal lectures. He became a mentor, a guide, and often a quiet source of support for students who needed more than textbook knowledge to succeed.

Many of the students Prof D Dey taught, mentored or supported later pursued education and careers through respected institutions in India and around the world.
Some went on to IITs, NITs, AIIMS, IISc, IISERs, and major Indian universities. Others found opportunities at leading international institutions including MIT and other respected universities and research organizations around the world.
But for Prof D Dey, success was never measured only by where someone studied or how much they earned. The real measure was whether, when they had the opportunity, they helped somebody else move forward.

After retirement
Retirement did not end Prof D Dey's work as an educator. It simply changed the classroom.
He continued focusing on educational opportunity for underprivileged children, starting an educational initiative using his own resources to help children who otherwise might not have the chance to continue their studies.
His philosophy remained unchanged: when we are able to help somebody else, we should.
Then our family needed help understanding.
In August 2026, Prof D Dey underwent a planned cardiac procedure. During that procedure he suffered a cardiac arrest and became critically ill.
Suddenly, his family found themselves in a position they had never experienced. They had to become:

Between hospital corridors, doctor conversations and messages from worried people around the world, one thought kept returning:

So we started building.
While Prof D Dey fights for recovery, family, friends and former students began building With You.

One place that kept friends and family informed without requiring another thirty phone calls.
